Long awaited mauritius

Mauritius.

Time really really flies and soon we get to this beautiful island. It has been said that God created the island to model what paradise would look like, on Earth! On the first day, met up with Megan after the diplomatic briefing and we just wandered around the city. We saw the mosque, chinatown, local temples and had some local food to eat. After wandering the city, we took a cab to one of the beaches, played around in the water and relaxed and came back for dinner at McDonald in the city. After dinner, I visited the local temple for Navratri, and saw the little pooja they had and saw the casino, enjoyed a bit of internet at a cafe before returning back.

Honestly, most people in that city were Indians. I knew that from global studies class, but just to witness it was mindblowing. I spoke to alot of the locals in Hindi and that felt very nice. I guess that’s the one thing - even away from home, you get a sense of comfort and belonging when you meet people from back home or are able to converse with people in the same language. There’s a special bond that the language creates. I remember the security guard in the shopping mall- how he was so excited when I spoke Hindi to him. Or the two cashiers at McDonald restaurant. They came with us to the temple. One of them told me how Salman Khan was in Mauritius at that point and how I had just missed him. She showed me the autograph she took and offered to give it to me, saying she’ll see him again very soon. Of course I declined the offer, it was hers and she definitely was a bigger fan of Salman that I am! (I hate that guy!!!!!!)

The second day in Mauritius, we went out in a catamaran snorkeling.  The first time I went underwater, I didn’t breathe properly and filled my lungs with salty sea water. When something like that happens, panic fills you and then you start panicking and are unable to swim. I got back on immediately because I was too scared and couldn’t breathe. After calming myself a bit more, I decided to go back down and venture again and this time I could really see the fish and the corals and admire their beauty. The water was literally crystal clear and one could see them completely!!! It was beautiful. We had an amazing BBQ lunch on the catamaran where they prepared wonderful food for us. Overall, it was just VERY relaxing!
